Herb Cantor
CPA, Former Revenue Agent/ Appeal Agent
Herb, originally from Coral Gables, Florida, began his professional journey with a two-year stint in public accounting at the global CPA firm Harris, Kerr Forster.
Transitioning from there, he was welcomed aboard the IRS, where he commenced in the Small Business Division as a Revenue Agent. His role primarily involved auditing both “C” and “S” corporations, as well as Schedule-C’s. His leadership skills shone through as he temporarily helmed the position of a group manager.
Six years into his tenure at the IRS, his commendable work led to a recommendation for him to transition to the Appeals Division. As an Appeals Officer, Herb dealt with a myriad of cases. His portfolio encompassed individual income tax disputes, discerning the applicability of the trust fund recovery penalty, evaluating claims for refunds, distinguishing between capital gains and ordinary income for asset sales, assessing the validity of charitable contribution valuations, and much more.
His proficiency in managing Offers in Compromise, addressing Doubts pertaining to Liability and Collectibility, and readying cases for the U.S. Tax Court is notable. He’s also been a notable speaker, sharing insights with professional groups such as the Greater Fort Lauderdale Tax Council and the Florida Institute of CPAs. His appearances on various radio talk shows have further solidified his reputation in the field.
Throughout his career, Herb has been lauded for his case resolutions, receiving appreciation letters from both taxpayers and their respective CPAs. Notably, he’s had successful collaborations with Mike Sullivan and Steve Jacob.
Specializing in the examination of individual and corporate accounts, appeals, and IRS negotiations, Herb is a recognized figure in the industry. Moreover, he has lent his expertise as a lay member to the Fee Arbitration Committee of the Broward County Bar Association.
After dedicating 18 years to the Appeals Division, he transitioned to the Large Case Division at the IRS. Here, Herb delved deep into the financial nuances of major corporations, once even tackling a case with a whopping sales figure exceeding $20 billion.
His extensive interactions with taxpayers and their representatives, including CPAs and attorneys, made him an invaluable asset. Beyond this, he also played a pivotal role as a consultant to the IRS Criminal Investigations Division, assisting in the determination of the nature – criminal or civil – of their tax cases.
